We extended our lead at the top of the Women’s Super League table on Sunday as we ran out comfortable 4-0 winners over Bristol City at the Stoke Gifford Stadium.
Joe Montemurro’s side started positively in possession, but it was our dogged defensive work that allowed us to create our first opportunity.
Leah Williamson regained possession high up the pitch and played the ball into Vivianne Miedema, who turned on the edge of the box before forcing Sophie Baggaley into a low save. Moments later, our Netherlands international fired wide from 20 yards out.
Williamson continued to push forward in a bid to find an opener - but this time her efforts were successful. Her lofted cross found the feet of Jordan Nobbs inside the box, who beat her marker and fired low into the back of the net.
Miedema and Danielle van de Donk then combined well on the edge of the box with some silky skills, but the latter’s powerful effort sailed over the bar.
We created one final chance before the break, though, and it fell to Miedema. Nobbs received the ball on the edge of the box and played our centre forward through on goal, who made no mistake in finding the bottom corner for her 10th WSL goal of the season so far.
We continued with our relentless attacking approach in the second half, and this provided Nobbs with a golden chance to make it three. Miedema stormed down the left wing and picked out Nobbs with a chipped delivery, but she just couldn’t direct her looping header on target.
Baggaley then denied Nobbs from close range, before tipping Miedema’s powerful left-footed effort over the bar.
The Vixens shot-stopper was in stunning form - and just moments later she denied Miedema twice in quick succession from inside the six-yard box.
Baggaley made save after save, but Miedema eventually found our third of the afternoon with a perfectly-weighted header into the far corner. Van de Donk was the architect - and deep into stoppage time she grabbed a goal of her own.
Lisa Evans’ driven effort was pushed away by Baggaley, but the rebound fell to Van de Donk, who was left with the simple task of firing home from six-yards out.
